What is the ISO 45001 standard?
ISO 45001 is a specialized standard for occupational health and safety management developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and is subject to ISO certification .
The ISO 45001 standard was first published in 2018 and as a developed and efficient tool to reduce and prevent occupational accidents, it was highly welcomed by enterprises, especially contractors and industrial units.
More than 7,600 people die every day from work-related accidents or illnesses, and that number is more than 2.78 million a year.
The burden of occupational injuries and work-related illnesses is significant, both for employers and for the economy, leading to early retirement losses, employee absenteeism, and increased premiums.
To address this, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is developing ISO 45001 (Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems).
ISO 45001 contains requirements and guidelines that help organizations address this burden by creating a framework for improving employee safety, reducing hazards in the workplace, and creating better and safer working conditions around the world.
Development of ISO 45001 standard and relationship with other standards
This standard is currently being developed by the Committee of Occupational Health and Safety Experts and follows other public management systems such as ISO 14001 and ISO 9001.
The ISO 45001 standard includes other international standards in this field such as OHSAS 18001, ILO-OSH guidelines, various national standards and international labor standards and the international standard of international conventions.
Relationship between ISO 45001 and OHSAS 18001
Prior to the drafting of the ISO 45001 standard, the ISO International Organization had not established a special governance for occupational safety and health management.
You might say that OHSAS 18001, which is also used in the IMS series, addresses this issue, but it is noteworthy that the OHSAS 18001 standard was not developed by the ISO International Organization.
The OHSAS 18001 standard was developed and introduced by the British Standards Institution (BSI) due to the lack of a special standard for occupational safety and health.
Now, considering that the ISO 45001 standard is written and ready to be presented, it is possible that the requirements of ISO 45001 will be implemented instead of OHSAS 18001.
