What is FSSC 22000?

Food Safety Certification 22000 (FSSC 22000) is a valid international certification system for food safety certification in the food and beverage industry. FSSC 22000 was developed using existing standards such as ISO 22000 , ISO 22003 and technical specifications for prerequisite programs (PRP).

FSSC 22000 is a certification system for food manufacturers and is owned by the Food Safety Certification Foundation. FSSC 22000 is the next logical step for ISO 22000 certification manufacturers who want to upgrade their certification to the recognized GFSI standard.

In other words, companies and organizations that have succeeded in obtaining ISO 22000 certification can receive FSSC 22000 certification to upgrade their organization.

FSSC 22000 certification sets out the organization’s requirements for developing, implementing, and operating a recognized GFSI food safety management system. FSSC 22000 certification proves that the food safety systems of these organizations are fully compliant with all FSSC 22000 requirements. FSSC 22000 was developed in response to customer requests for a recognizable standard where a food safety management system can be audited and then certified.

What is the scope of application of FSSC 22000 for what products?

FSSC 22000 is used in the food chain of the following products:

  • Perishable animal food products (ie meat, poultry, eggs, dairy products and fish)
  • Perishable plant products (eg fresh fruits and juices, canned fruits, fresh vegetables, stored vegetables)
  • Products with a long shelf life at room temperature (eg canned goods, biscuits, snacks, oils, drinking water, beverages, pasta, flour, sugar, salt)
  • Biochemistry (eg vitamins, additives and biologicals), but other than technical assistance

This system is applicable to all food chain organizations, regardless of size and complexity, profitability or not, public or private.
