Instructions for easy upgrades to version 3.x and Field Communicator
Important – Before proceeding with the upgrade instructions, we need to have an overview of the following.
Note:
If your Field Communicator is currently upgraded to version 3.x, you only need to do step 1 to upgrade to version 3.
Overview
There are five steps to upgrade Communicator Field to version 3.x software.
- Use the Utility Easy Upgrade Utility to download and install version 3 of the upgrade software (version 3.0 or higher).
- Use the Computer Update button in the upgrade software (version 3.x) to download the software version 3.x and DDs to your computer.
- Using the upgrade software (3.x) to upgrade to version 3.x software in the Communicator Field card system requires a remote.
- Enter the upgraded card system in the Communicator Field to upgrade the Communicator Field.
- Record field links.
Depending on the speed of the Internet, steps 1 and 2 may take up to 40 minutes. As an alternate method for use with slow Internet connections, software upgrades, along with software version 3.x and Dds, can be directly Ftp://Ftp.emersonprocess.com/Ao/Downloads/Resourcecd / 475Resourcecd (If you are using an unreliable internet connection, please contact Field Communicator Technical Support for common ways to upgrade your communications.)
When you buy Field Communicator, there is a DVD in the box that can be used instead of the above item.
Once downloaded, save the file and run the Easy Ugrade Utility (TPUInstall.exe) installer from a root directory (for example: C: \ or D: \) on a removable hard disk, CD, DVD, or flash drive. Before performing this new installation, be sure to uninstall any old Easy Upgrade installers. After the installation is complete, proceed to step 3. A password is required to open this file. This is necessary for export compliance purposes and can be obtained by calling the Field Communicator technical support.
If multiple Field Communicators start upgrading from one PC, steps 1 and 2 need to be completed.
Prerequisites (check before doing the following)
Easy Upgrade Utility version 3.0 or higher is installed.
Field Communicator includes system software 3.1 or earlier.
A RAM reader (SD) is installed or connected to your computer.
Note that any HART settings stored in the Communicator Field flash drive will be lost after the upgrade, unless it is first stored in a development module (note only 375 Field Communicator can extend a module) or in AMS Ite Suite: Intelligent device management saved.
If 375 Field Communicator has Expansion Module installed next to the unit, remove it before upgrading. Once the upgrade is complete, it can be re-entered
An internet connection is required to download the new system software and DDs, and it registers the Field Communicator software.
Step 1: Download new Easy Upgrade Utility version 3.x (or use the DVD in the box)
1.1 – Launch the upgrade software (version 3.0 or earlier). Note: The images below are based on an upgrade from 375 Easy Utility Update to version 2.0.3. If you already have Easy Upgrade 3.0, click the Update Computer button on the Upgrade page, then follow the instructions.
1.2 From the Public tab, click the Check for Updates button.
A message indicates that an important update for Utility Easy Upgrade is displayed. Click OK
1.3 Save the new Easy Upgrade installation file (TPUInstall.exe) to one place on your computer.
A page opens: it looks like you want to save this installation file.
Select a folder from this page and click OK to start the download. The left side of the status bar at the bottom of the screen indicates that the new Upgrade Utility is easy to download. Wait for the download to complete
1.4 exit the upgrade software.
1.5 To install Easy Upgrade Utility , double-click TPUInstall.exe at the location selected in step 1.3.
Follow all instructions to complete the installation.
Step 2: Download the new software version 3.x and DDs on the computer
2.1 Open the new Easy Upgrade software by selecting Start All Programs Field Communicator Easy Upgrade Utility Field Communicator Easy Upgrade Utility from the Windows taskbar.
Version 3.x is displayed in the title bar of the upgraded utility tool. If a version other than 3.x appears, contact Field Communicator Technical Support.
2.2 From the upgrade window, click the Update Computer button and follow the instructions.
You will be asked to select a country. Select it and click OK.
At this time, the software downloads the latest version of system software and DDs.
Duration will vary due to differences in download speed.
The average download time is 30 minutes.
If the PartnerNet login page is displayed at this point, then sign in to your PartnerNet using your existing account or create a new one.
2.3 Click on the option below.
This message indicates that the download was successful. If the download is incomplete, contact Field Communicator Technical Support.
Step 3: Now we come to the part where we have to upgrade our RAM.
3.1 Verify that an SD RAM is connected to a laptop or computer and has been successfully detected in Windows Explorer.
Do not insert the System Card into the card reader at this time.
Important Note: The following SD cards have been tested and proven to be upgraded with Field Communicator 3.x software system:
- SanDisk SDDR 104 *
- SanDisk SDDR 99 A15 (Firmware version 4)
- SanDisk SDDR 33
- Kingston Travel Lite FCR – HS2MMC
- Panasonic Toughbook (models CF-18, CF-29, and CF-30) Internal SD card reader
The following SD card readers do not work with upgrades:
- SanDisk MicroMate SDDR 133
- 10 Gear Pocket Drive GFR202SD
Carefully remove the system card from the Field Communicator and insert it into the RAM reader. To access the system card, you must remove the Field Communicator battery.
Warning: Inserting a card system into a card reader A special window may appear for Windows Explorer or the card reader. This window should not be used to transfer files and should be closed immediately. Directly editing or transferring any file on the system card with Windows Explorer may corrupt the card.
3.3 From the upgrade window, select the RAM reader in the connection type list and click Connect.

Card system upgrade starts. The upgrade time of the card system varies with the type of RAM reader and the type of card system, but the average upgrade time is 2 to 3 minutes.
Note: If you have a 128 MB card, you may be asked to delete some unused DDs.

Step 4: Now it’s time to upgrade your Field Communicator device system
4.1 After completing the card system upgrade, disconnect the card system from the RAM reader, insert it into the Field Communicator, and install the battery.
4.2 Turn on Field Communicator and follow the instructions for upgrading to System 3.x software. Note that this upgrade includes an operating system upgrade.
The software system upgrade time will be approximately 50 minutes: 30 minutes for the operating system upgrade and 20 minutes for the application software upgrade.
4.3 To verify that your communicator is properly updated, make sure that the “Ver 3.x software system” is displayed at the bottom of the main Communicator Field menu.
Step 5: Record the field links
5.1 From the main menu, double-click the Field Communicator menu Listen For PC ..
If it is 475 Field Communicator, make sure it is an IrDA connection type.
5.2 Install the IrDA Port Communicator with an IrDA port or adapter on a laptop computer.
5.3 From the Upgrade window In the Easy Upgrade Utility, select IrDA from the connection type list and click Connect.
5.4 From the license and registration window, click online at the bottom of the page.
5.5 If the currently selected dialog box appears, select the name of the country you are currently in and click OK.
5.6 If you have a PartnerNet account, enter your email address and password and click Sign in.
If you do not have an account, click on the new account link, enter your information and click Submit. Log in after creating your account
Page 5.7 shows that “Update Complete Complete” is registered. You have successfully completed the registration process.
Note: If 475 is Field Communicator, step 5 “Register Communicator Field” can also be done via Bluetooth connection. The steps are similar to IrDA connection.
Troubleshooting tips
The following possible errors may occur after the updated card system is placed in the Communicator Field and the connector is updated to version 3.
