Water is an essential element in the stability of our planet. About 2.2 billion people do not have access to safe water. Assessing this important resource was the theme of this year’s World Water Day. ISO has many standards in this area that help all of us sustain the planet and access safe water.
Standards that protect our most valuable resource
ISO 31600 , Water Efficiency – Requirements with implementation guide, help different regions to introduce their design. This standard provides a set of best practices and guidelines for preparing and implementing a water efficiency program for plumbing products and water consumables.
Richard Lambert, director of the ISO Committee, said the guide is to create more water-efficient applications that in turn boost product markets.
“It is expected that the application of such knowledge to consumers will lead to greater demand for water-consuming products,” Richard said. This will encourage producers to invest more in this area.
ISO 46001 is related to water efficiency management systems. This guide provides methods and tools for measuring water consumption and helps organizations take action to optimize its use.
Other ISO standards that help organizations save water include the two parts of ISO 20760 , water reuse in urban areas – guidelines for a centralized water reuse system, and the ISO 16075 series for wastewater treatment. In irrigation projects.
These standards are just a handful of the hundreds of ISO standards that contribute to sustainable development in clean water and sanitation (SDG 6). The purpose of adopting these standards is to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. By 2030, water use efficiency will increase significantly in all sectors and it will be ensured that the supply of fresh water to address water shortages and the number of water shortage sectors will be significantly reduced.
